Gable House

Gable House is sited at the end of a small cul-de-sac, backing onto woods, and has been designed as a contemporary interpretation of the local arts and crafts style. The house is about 280sqm (3000sft) and has a number of low-energy features including an air source heat pump, photo voltaic panels with battery storage, mechanical ventilation with heat recovery and solar-control glass to the south east and south west elevations. The EPC rating is A (92) and annual energy consumption is about 40kWhr/yr, which is similar to Passivhaus standards.

The design of this contemporary newly built home uses proportions and references inspired by traditional houses in the area. The house has an open plan kitchen, dining, living room, a separate cosy sitting room, 3 bedrooms, en-suite bathrooms, and a studio with large windows and views to all 4 sides. Modern materials were used to clad the building and large double-glazed windows and thin framed sliding doors provide lovely views of the garden and woodlands beyond.

The L shaped plan makes optimum use of the site, minimises the extent of corridors and enables through views. The hallway and stair feature a double height window which floods the space with natural light. The topography of the site enabled the forecourt to be lower than the entrance which with careful landscaping and flower beds makes the entrance more prominent. This also improves privacy.
